STM Publishers Capitalize on Demand for E-Content and Tools, Says Simba Information's Global STM Publishing 2007-2008

Press Release
Jun 27, 2007
Stamford, CT, June 27, 2007 / PR Newswire — The transition from print to electronic publishing has given STM publishers two ways to fuel revenue growth and the market leaders are cashing in, according to the newly released Global STM Publishing 2007-2008, the latest strategic market report from Simba Information.

The combined global STM (scientific, technical and medical) publishing market grew 4.4% to $14.1 billion in 2006 and Simba forecasts sales will grow at that pace into 2007. Traditional publishing models for books and journals continue to thrive as delivery of those products shifts to electronic formats and customer adoption speeds up, while publishers generate new revenue from the demand for tools to search, index, link, cite and manage the vast amounts of electronic information now available to researchers and clinical professionals.

Global expansion continues to be a primary strategy of nearly all the major industry players."The Chinese market will grow in importance as its economic power builds and publishers become more accustomed to navigating government regulation there," said Dan Strempel, senior editor/analyst of Simba’s STM group and lead author of the study.

Among the report’s findings:

  • The Online/A&I segment grew fastest compared to the other content delivery segments in 2006 – 7.7% to $2.9 billion in the STM market.
  • The multi-billion dollar medical publishing industry continued to hit new revenue highs in 2006, growing 4.5% to $6.4 billion.

The newly released report provides an overview and financial outlook for the global STM publishing markets based on research and analysis of the leading competitors in the markets and market performance in six content delivery categories. This research was conducted in conjunction with a larger study of the overall market for professional publishing, the results of which will be published in the associated Simba reports Global Legal & Business Publishing 2007-2008 and Global Professional Publishing 2007-2008.
