Social Studies Claims Attention in State K-12 Instructional Materials Adoptions in 2017

March 23, 2018 – Stamford, CT – Schools and states are exhibiting a renewed interest in social studies, after years of putting it on the back burner, according to new research from Simba Information.

“Along with a strong interest in STEM and career and technical education, states are bringing social studies back into the mainstream, according to state Every Student Succeeds Act accountability plans,” said Kathy Mickey, senior analyst and managing editor of Simba’s Education Group.

In 2017, the schools in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Idaho and New Mexico began choosing new social studies materials. Sales in social studies adoptions in 2017 are the focal point of Simba’s newly available 2017 National Instructional Materials Adoption Scorecard and 2018 Outlook report.

The annual report provides a singular look at sales by subject in particular states—those states classified as adoption states, which conduct statewide reviews and purchasing processes for instructional materials. Simba estimated that in 2017, publishers generated $530 million from new adoption sales.

One of the striking features of the modern ‘textbook’ adoption is the reduction in importance of the traditional textbook component. “More often than not, instructional materials programs comprise multiple multi-format resources, one of which may be a book in digital format that also is available in a soft-cover or hard-bound format,” Mickey said.

The annual report provides data on specific state adoptions, including breakdown of sales by grade levels, the annual publisher scorecard, background on the importance of instructional materials adoptions to distribution in the PreK-12 instructional materials industry, changes affecting the adoption process and a state-by-state calendar of adoption market opportunities from 2018 through 2021.
